Brazilian Zouk · Practice · Transfer

Why does your Zouk pattern disappear at the social?

A movement working immediately after a teacher demonstrates it is not the same as being able to retrieve and adapt it later. The social removes many of the cues that made the classroom version easier.

Class gives you the answer before you need it

You know which movement is coming, which entrance was practiced and often which rhythm to expect. At a social, you have to perceive the situation and choose an action without that prompt.

One partner can hide what has not generalized

Repeated practice with the same person can become extremely efficient. That is useful for learning, but it can also create solutions tuned to that partner. Changing partners tests whether the underlying skill transfers.

A pattern is several skills bundled together

Timing, weight transfer, pathway, connection, orientation and decision-making can all sit inside one pattern. If one component is unstable, reproducing the complete choreography under changing music becomes harder.

Practice the skill, then remove the scaffolding

First simplify the problem. Then vary one relevant condition—entry, direction, tempo or partner. Finally dance without requiring the movement to happen. What remains available is a better test of transfer than the final repetition of a drill.
