Choose the level before the location
Where should a beginner start?
Look for a class explicitly labeled beginner, foundations or introduction. A social is a different activity: people dance freely rather than follow one lesson together. Some organizers combine both, but check whether instruction is included and whether it suits first-timers.
My Tuesday classes are intermediate+, so I do not recommend them as your first introduction to Brazilian Zouk. Experience in another partner dance does not automatically establish that this level fits. Tell me what you have already studied; an individual lesson is one option, not a prerequisite everyone must purchase.
For an independently organized beginner group option, Danznik's Brazilian Zouk with Hara & Friends currently lists a Level 1 foundations class alongside Level 2 training. Its beginner listing says no partner or prior experience is required. Follow the organizer's page for current dates, prices and enrollment.
The NYC Zouk Festival also describes a dedicated “Dare to Zouk” beginner program. A festival is a separate event, not a replacement for checking a weekly school's schedule.
